Markland Wood

Right at the very west end of Bloor Street lies this quiet Etobicoke enclave. Markland Wood (not woods, as residents will quickly correct) is known for being a quiet, family suburb with a considerable sense of community. If you’ve ever been to Markland Wood you probably associate those houses with empty nesters, but there are also lots of condominiums in the area.

What was once a sizeable farmland owned by the prominent Silverthorne Family was sold to a developer in 1958, likely because the city of Toronto had continued to creep closer to its doorstep. The development that followed in the early 60’s led directly to the conscientious community that remains today.

Markland Wood has a serious sense of community pride, and a very active homeowners association, even to this day, and community events like annual creek clean ups are heavily attended.

Families once made up the bulk of this neighbourhood, and it’s not uncommon to meet residents who have lived in the area for 30 years. The reasonable price for a starter home also brings a lot of young professionals who grew up in the area back after time spent downtown–often to start a family of their own!

Quiet streets, good schools, and yards that make you forget you’re actually in Toronto. People take an active interest in keeping the community family-oriented and safe.
